ZEETO ELLAS, ZEETO ELEFTERIA. That is the motto for the last week in New York. It means long live Greece, long live freedom and everyone from Mayor Bloomberg upwards and downwards was saying it. The Mayor hosted a reception at Gracie Mansion for the Greek Parade. He was very funny - first he said that the preceeding week for Saint Paddy's Day, he had introduced himself as Mayor O'Bloomberg and for the Greek tribute, he calls himself Michalis Bloombergolopoulos. It had music, hors d'oeuvres, Greek beauties and a tour of the mansion. Built in 1810, Mr. Gracie, a large ship owner lived there with his family. The wall paper had different scenes, some floral; the furniture was lovely (mirrors were expensive then) and the art abounded - Louise Bourgeoise, Picasso, - paintings and prints everywhere. I marched in the parade just in back of the Olympic atheletes. One lady was born in 1948 - a gymnast in great shape and my favorite iceskater - Judy Bloomberg (any relation?) was there as well as the athletes from the soccer team that will compete this summer. There was also a rececption by Controller Walter Thompson at City Hall honoring various successful Greeks from New York including Peter Gianopoulos. And the new Greek Counsul, Catherine Bouras held a reception too. It's been a jolly time - ZEETO HELLAS. |
