At BAM, Michael Cunningham read from his novel and the Brooklyn Philharmonic played excerpts alternating WORDS AND MUSIC. He wrote THE HOURS, which was made into the film starring NICOLE KIDMAN and MERRYL STREEP. And the accompanying music of PHILLIP GLASS was brilliant. Afterwards, the maestro on loan from the Ireland Orchestra, Mr Eddins, joined Mr. Cunningham, and soprano Maureen O'Flynn for questions and answers. Asked who his mentor was, Mr. Cunningham responded "Jimmy Hendrix". That made everyone laugh for sure. They also used a celesta instrument - which everyone heard and nobody saw. It was a wonderful event , I hope they do more words and music at BAM, I'll run to see and hear it. Goodbye LUTECE, La COTE BASQUE, GAGE and TOLLNER. I remember having lunch at La Cote Basque with my college roommate, Mary S. who had to change out of her pants suit to eat - we manufactured a skirt in the ladies room - of course that was many years ago. |
